Description
The plot of this book resembles an adventure novel. A Belarusian boy from Volozhin, mobilized in 1941 for forestry work in Karelia, after going through many trials ends up after some time – through Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Apennines – in Britain and then in America… However, this is not literary fiction. It is a true biography of a participant in World War II in the western theater of warfare.
The author’s excellent memory recalls a wealth of facts, names, figures and pertinent observations. An appendix to the book includes the equally informative memoirs of his sister, Valancina Machnač-Slabodčykavaj, and selected correspondence.
For a wide range of readers.
