Description
Biełaruskaja Narodnaja Respublika has repeatedly been an important topic at scientific conferences, in articles and chapters of monographs. Most authors cited the works of Darota Michaliuk, recognizing the value of the theses and conclusions contained in her research. In the case of the dissertation on the Biełaruskaja Narodnaja Respublika, it would be accurate to say that the author found her topic.
Reading the book gives the impression that for Darota Michaliuk it was not just a work born out of a sense of duty to write a dissertation necessary for an academic career, but also a grand intellectual adventure, best characterized by two sentences in the introduction: “A few years ago, for the first time, I was looking through printed documents concerning the Biełaruskaja Narodnaja Respublika. They seemed to me a vivid testimony of an extraordinary political drama: youthful ideals, dreams of one’s own state, a lack of understanding from international political circles, unexpected turns, romantic heroes. Finally — the tragic finale of the Belarusian independence idea and its supporters.” This is a great situation for a scientist, when a research problem absorbs them as much as a sensational novel absorbs fans of the genre.
