Description
This book began with a question asked by Belarusian writer Sviatlana Aleksijevič to Marie Luise Knott, a renowned German expert on the intellectual legacy of Channa Arent, at the International Literature Festival Cologne in 2022. “Can you tell me what Channa Arent thought about collective guilt? Does German guilt exist?” Sviatlana asked. She was interested in the concept of “organized guilt” — the fact that the Nazis made Germans co-authors of crimes or passive accomplices.
Since there was no opportunity for an in-depth discussion at the time, Sviatlana suggested that Marie Luise compile a book of Arent’s essays for publication by the “Pflaumbaum” publishing house. The result is the first book by the eminent thinker in the Belarusian language.
