Description
“The Ears of Rye Under Thy Sickle” by Uladzimir Karatkievič is invariably the most beloved work of Belarusian literature. It is a journey to the threshold of the 1863-1864 uprising, and to the emotional world of a man who, perhaps, was not the first to notice the unjust “sweeping under the rug” of true Belarusian history, but was one of the first to be painfully unable to keep silent about it.
Outside Belarus, the novel is being published in Belarusian for the first time. This edition not only publishes the text the author fought for during his lifetime, removing changes made in the 1968 edition. Carefully, guided by textual empathy, we are introducing some important contours and thus freeing the writer’s voice from ideological pressure.
