Description
This book is far from ordinary. It marks the beginning of a grand journey to establish the European cultural route of Francysk Skaryna. Alongside prominent Skaryna scholars, the author visits the cities where Skaryna left his cultural mark and invites readers to join this fascinating voyage.
The author sets an ambitious goal: to demonstrate how the European context — universities, printing houses, and connections with scholars and artists — shaped the worldview of the pioneer printer and his monumental work.
Alaksandr Kaŭbaska explores Skaryna’s educational path, from his studies in Krakow to his brilliant defense of a medical doctorate at the University of Padua. He describes lesser-known chapters of his service in Vilnia and Königsberg and reflects on what commemorates Skaryna today in Prague, Padua, Krakow, and other European centers.
Thanks to the artwork by Miša Dajlidaŭ, the reader can literally feel the breath of old Europe and see Skaryna as a living person moving between cities and countries, bringing the light of knowledge back to his Homeland.
