This historical novel is set in the second half of the 18th century. It is primarily a journey through the Republic, where nations, religions and cultures intertwine. It is the story of the charismatic, self-proclaimed messiah Jacob Frank, told by his followers, documented in court records and ridiculed by his enemies.
By the time the Belarusian edition was published, the work had been translated into fifteen languages, and its readership in Poland alone exceeded half a million. Undeniably, it is one of the most important works of contemporary Polish literature, which strengthened the author’s position among the most outstanding authors of world literature and contributed to the awarding of Olga Tokarczuk the Nobel Prize for Literature for 2018.
