The book was Bella’s last work, and the illustrations were created by Marc Chagall himself after his beloved’s death to preserve their shared world forever.

The memoirs of Bella Chagall (maiden name Rosenfeld) consist of two parts – “Lighted Candles” (1945) and “First Meeting” (1947). Both were written in Yiddish and published only after the author’s death. The book emotionally and vividly recounts Bella’s childhood, her acquaintance with Mark Chagall and opens up to the reader the life of Vitebsk at the turn of the 20th century, a city with a rich Jewish culture.
