Description
This book is the result of deliberate, long-term research into the musical folklore of the Old Believers of western Podzvin. It consists of three chapters: “Work Songs,” “Krutuchi, Korovody, Pochadushki” (ritual dances and songs), and “Lyrical Songs.” Each chapter includes a thorough ethnomusicological commentary in three languages: Belarusian, Russian, and English. Transcriptions of field interviews and song lyrics are provided in the local Old Believer dialect.
The collection includes 45 musical and textual transcriptions of folk songs (published for the first time), each of which can be heard in an authentic performance. The oldest audio recording dates from 1963, and the oldest singer whose voice can be heard in the publication was born in the 1890s. The book is illustrated with photographs collected or taken during folklore and ethnographic expeditions.
